John Lamm Biography

John Lamm, 60, has been an automotive journalist for 35 years. Lamm actually began taking photos of race cars at the age of 15 when he attended his first race at Elkhart Lake’s Road America in 1960.

A journalism graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Lamm was an officer in the Army, completing a tour of Vietnam. When his Army career ended in 1969, Lamm joined the staff of Motor Trend magazine, but left in 1975 to become a feature editor for Road & Track magazine. After working on the staff for seven years, he began freelancing, though he retained the title of Editor At Large for R&T and has continued with the magazine for the past 22 years.

In addition to Road & Track, Lamm is a correspondent for Japan’s Car Graphic, Australia’s Wheels and France’s Automobiles Classiques.

The first two-time winner of the West Coast Motor Press Guild’s Dean Batchelor award, Lamm received his first as a writer for an article on the original Corvette Sting Ray. The late Dean Batchelor was one of the most highly respected automotive journalists in the U.S. and Lamm collaborated with him on books about the Harrah’s automotive collection and sportsman Briggs Cunningham.

Lamm has also been awarded the East Coast International Motor Press Guild’s Ken Purdy award for a Road & Track story about the World War II Jeep. In 2003, Lamm was honored with the International Automotive Media Association’s lifetime achievement award...though he isn’t THAT old.

Residents of San Clemente, CA, Lamm and his wife, Scheri, have five children, Aaron, Lisa, Angie, Chris and Holly, and five grandchildren, Will, Sarah, Mikey, Hayden and Casey. Needless to say, Scheri and John don’t have a lot of spare time.
