Cobras, The Building of the Leaf Spring Cars

"COBRAS, The Building of the Leaf Spring Cars"
is a road map to how the 1962-1964 leaf spring Cobras originated and were put together by AC Cars in England. The book also details how the cars were completed in the United States by both European Cars in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and especially by Shelby American in Venice, California. The thirteen chapters cover all major Cobra components consisting of chassis construction, aluminum body forming, engine development, driveline components, upholstery, and finishing techniques. Each chapter is illustrated with dozens of rare original black-and-white factory photographs and background material, such as component illustrations and parts numbers. The research information that is included in these pages is the product of well over a dozen of the most knowledgeable Cobra researchers, historians and restorers in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

Author Biography

Robert Walker grew up in Hayward, California and received a BA degree in Public Relations from San Jose State College in 1965 and a Masters in Industrial Arts from Chico State College two years later. He then taught Vocational Education and Journalism on the Secondary and Junior College level for 20 years. Subsequently, he and his talented wife, Joy, owned and operated a successful retail furniture business for over ten years and retired to Pebble Beach, California in 1998.

From an early age, he owned a series of convertibles and sports cars and his enthusiasm was cemented when he bought a Ferrari and then took a driving class at Russell Racing School at Laguna Seca in 1993. The next year, his wife bought him a 1963 Elva Courier for a Christmas present. He has also restored a 1958 Elva Courier and raced both cars in club events and the Monterey Historics as a member of the Historic Motor Sports Association and with Steve Earl’s General Racing. He continues to restore sports cars and fabricate race car parts for vintage racing applications.

This is Bob’s third book, the first was the now sold out Cobra Pilote: The Ed Hugus Story, the second was the 2-volume set Shelby Cobras: CSX 2001-CSX 2125, The Definitive Chassis-by-Chassis History of the Mark I Production Carsalso published by Dalton Watson.
