Automobile Concept Art from the 1930s to the 1980s
Regular Edition
Patrick Kelley

The golden age of American automobile design is universally considered to be from the 1940s to the early 1970s, an innovative period for the country’s automobile manufacturers and for the artists who designed and styled the cars of the future. The goal was to sell more cars primarily by employing artists to create vehicles with ‘eye appeal’ for the buying public. There were many thousands of drawings of these futuristic models, but almost all have been lost or purposely destroyed by the manufacturers to minimize copying. The eye-catching images shown in this book have been gatheredtogether over the last 15 years and now form part of The Kelley Collection. They are rare survivors and illustrate the work of the men and woman who drew and designed the cars from their early days at art school and during their employment with the ‘Big Three’ automobile manufacturers. These artists have been almost forgotten and this book honors them for their contributions and imagination. The reader is taken back to earlier times when the sky was the limit, dreams and vision were encouraged and restrictions were few. 87 individual artists are represented here with 235 wonderfully unique images.

Patrick Kelley
Author Biography

After a lifetime of fascination with all things automobile, Patrick Kelley shares his love for cars and art. About 15 years ago, he stumbled onto what would soon be a new passion, the collection of original automobile concept art by many of the finest designers and stylists working in and around Detroit. These were drawing and paintings of what future automobiles might look like. Patrick felt that the story of this futuristic work that came out of art schools across America and ultimately the ‘Big Three’ automobile companies had to be told. More about Patrick Kelley

a study of things that never saw the light of day and yet you can see the give and take of design over time, how influence shaped what became cars and which were stepping stones. Great little coffee table book to fuel dreams.

I have a signed copy.  I bought this for my brother-in-law.  He loves concept car art and has a Masters in Art History.  What better gift of the great work by Pat Kelley?  I attended school with Pat starting in the 3rd grade.  He taught me how to draw a car!  Alas, a wasted effort, but Pat has such a great appreciation and eye for the art that is Automobile!  Thanks Dalton Watson for supporting Pat's efforts!  You understand him.
