Walter Bäumer was born into a family of auto enthusiasts. His uncle, Walter Bäumer senior, was the 1930's factory driver of the Austin Motor Company and became a member of the Mercedes Benz Grand Prix teams in 1938-39 and drove the Silver Arrows in the Grand Prix of Bern/Switzerland, the Germany Grand Prix, the Grand Prix of Donington and the Belgrade Grand Prix. In 1940 Walter Bäumer Sn. won the Mille Miglia together with Huschke von Hanstein in a BMW 328 Touring coupe.
Growing up aound a Mercedes 300SL Gullwing in the late 1950s induced an enthusiasm for fast and exotic cars for Walter Bäumer jr.
During his years as an international fashion photographer working for many magazines such as Elle, Vogue, Lucca, Playboy, etc. his passion for vehicles from Maserati also became an important part of his life, in particular, the iconic 300S and the beautiful A6G 2000 Zagato. International Research Maserati was founded in 2008.
Walter Bäumer`s first book, The Maserati 300S, was published in 2009 and he is currently working on another automotive book project.
